Understanding Your Bill

The City of Omaha sets sewer fees, which are billed and collected by Metropolitan Utilities District (M.U.D.) and then returned to the City. Omaha owns and operates the regional wastewater system, including two treatment facilities and over 3,000 miles of sewer lines. Customer payments support the operation, maintenance, and upgrades of this system, ensuring safe wastewater collection and treatment for the metro area.

How Sewer Use Charges Are Calculated

Sewer use charges are calculated based on water usage per customer. More information, including a residential rate calculator and frequently asked questions, is found at https://publicworks.cityofomaha.org/environment-quality/sewer-use-fees.

Long-Term Upgrades Under the Wastewater Facilities Masterplan

The City has begun to implement its Wastewater Facilities Masterplan, a program that includes upgrades to its two WRRFs over the next 15 to 20 years. This work will ensure these facilities will have the ability to meet the demands of a growing metro area and stricter federal guidelines for treatment.

Need Financial Assistance?

Residents who qualify for Nebraska’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) qualify for sewer rate assistance. Since 2011, over $21.46 million in sewer assistance has been provided to residential ratepayers. To see if you qualify for the LIHEAP, call the Nebraska Economic Assistance Omaha Office at 402-595-1258 or visit https://dhhs.ne.gov/Pages/Energy-Assistance.aspx

What’s my responsibility?

The City of Omaha is only responsible for the main public sewers. For information about your private service laterals, we recommend you hire a licensed plumbing company that provides such services. Service laterals convey wastewater from the building that originates into the public sewer system. Maintenance and repair of service laterals are the responsibility of the property owner from the building to the point of connection to the main sewer. The City is responsible for the repair of the main sewer lines.

More information on sewers can be found on the Public Works Department website.
